Tart Fruit

An apple looks like a true heart, but its core hides a bitter tang.

People are trapped in a pond, like fish waiting to be cut up.

Entangled since youth, every step a new calamity.

Youthful love bears bitter fruit, while obsession lingers on.

Chi Wu had always thought Lin Jin hated her.

After all, when Lin Jin had offered her the first green apple from the backyard, Chi Wu had taken a bite right in front of her, then turned and tossed it in the trash.

After all, when the whole class had pointed at Lin Jin and called her a thief, Chi Wu had stood by without saying a word.

So three years later, when Lin Jin cornered her in a private room at a bar, forced her to drink a thousand-yuan glass of liquor, and pierced her long-healed ear with an earring, Chi Wu wasn't surprised at all.

If she'd been in Lin Jin's shoes, she would have hated her too.

But what truly began to frighten Chi Wu was when Lin Jin dragged her back to the villa, pinned her beside the bed, and, eyes red, asked her again and again:

“When I was crying back then...

Did you ever, even once, think about holding me?”

“Just once...”

Chi Wu couldn't answer.

She was afraid to think too hard about it. All she remembered from that year was how annoying Lin Jin's tears had been. She couldn't remember why, in the end, she'd still gone out and bought a teddy bear ten times bigger than the original.

She could admit Lin Jin hated her.

But she didn't dare admit what else might be buried beneath that hatred.
