A Friendly Reminder

This is an original work of fiction inspired by a game. The characters' backstories and the world are gradually revealed through the narrative, so readers who haven't played the game can enjoy it as a complete supernatural tale set in the late Ming dynasty.

During the Ten Days of Yangzhou, a hundred thousand demon soldiers massacred the city.

After the woman he loved jumped into the river, Fang Zhiyou went mad for three years, shut himself away, and wrote a supernatural tale about demon soldiers slaughtering a city. On the night the city fell, he plunged into the hellscape he had written: demon soldiers filled the streets, and corpses littered the ground. In the ruins, he saved a girl who looked just like someone he had once known. He reunited with the most lowly old acquaintance from the pleasure quarter, met a scarred man seeking to atone for his past for the rest of his life, and encountered a mysterious woman wearing a Qionghua flower in her hair, who led a rebel army sheltering the vulnerable.

When Fang Zhiyou discovered the secret hidden in his manuscript, that the demon soldiers' strength came not from their numbers but from the fear of being “alone” in everyone's heart, he understood that the only way to break the catastrophe was to ensure no one had to face the darkness alone.

Amid the ruins of history, those crushed beneath its weight illuminated one another with the smallest acts of kindness: a floating river lantern, a bowl of watery porridge, a ledger filled with names. They were not heroes, and they could not turn back history. They simply chose to go on living, carrying their memories and their hope.
