The Sea Beyond Death

After a financial collapse, Gu Beichen retreats from New York to Lingshui, Hainan, and spends the rest of his life in a dilapidated fishing hut by the sea. Ji Xiaotang is a doctoral researcher working on coral reef restoration. She has ALS, yet insists on planting what little life she has left beneath the waves. One has lost faith in the world of capital; the other refuses to give up as her time runs out. They meet beside a dying coral sea. As an adoption program gets underway, powerful interest groups close in, and her illness steadily worsens, the two begin to understand money, value, dignity, and salvation anew amid the ebb and flow of the tides. Perhaps no one can be another's savior, but there is always another way to live, and a little light to leave behind.
