Haruno Akira's Wood Release is not the same as Senju Hashirama's.
Hashirama uses wood to attack the world - thousands of hands, Buddhas on the top, and births in the tree world, all aimed at crushing the opponent.
What did Ming use Mudun to do? He took action for the first time on the night of Kyuubi. The vines wrapped around Kyuubi's limbs, not to strangle, but to comfort. Hashirama Cell didn't fight in his hands, he only listened to advice.
Later he discovered an even more outrageous usage.
He can use Wood Release to "file" his opponent.
