Secondment Diary of a Young Teacher

Chen Qingsheng was once a key teacher at Qingshan Town Middle School. When an unexpected opportunity arose to fill in temporarily at the county education bureau, he found himself stepping through its doors. Hoping to change the course of his life, he plunged into a sea of paperwork and meetings, trying to find his footing amid bureaucratic maneuvering and tests of the rules. At first, he was bewildered and uncomfortable with how the office operated. Then came a brief moment of triumph: after working through three sleepless nights to revise a document, he was singled out for praise by the bureau chief. During the long struggle to secure a permanent post, he witnessed both the formal rules and hidden barriers to promotion, and experienced firsthand the frustration of mismatched responsibilities and authority at the grassroots level, the strain of navigating personal connections, and the gap between ideals and reality.

The day he finally cleared the hurdle and secured his post, Chen Qingsheng stood in the education bureau's hallway and suddenly understood: the true measure of his worth had never been a rank defined by others, but the life choices he could make for himself. This story lays bare the many realities of life within the grassroots bureaucracy, and explores how ordinary people ultimately seek meaning in their careers at a crossroads in life.
