Mu Ning, an orphan of five, was sold by a child trafficker to the assassin organization known as the Black Garment Tower. After surviving a bloody trial in Qingzhu Village, he became a gray-clad assassin called “Silent Blade.” Starting at the age of eight, he carried out assassination missions and endured brutal training, including skin tempering with a hundred poisons and bone forging with Bajiquan. By twelve, he had reached the Iron Bones Realm. At thirteen, he achieved minor mastery of hidden force and was ordered to infiltrate the Thousand Mechanisms Sect under the false identity of Feng Lin, young master of the Wind-Listening Manor, to steal the technology behind the Talisman-Armored Intelligent Puppets.

At the Thousand Mechanisms Sect, Mu Ning displayed astonishing talent. He fought his way from the outer sect into the inner sect, became a disciple of Ximen Xuan, head of the Formation Hall, and learned the Five Elements Formation and the Soul-Binding Formation. At sixteen, he broke through to the Innate Mortal-Shedding Realm. The following year, after obtaining the complete technology for the Talisman-Armored Intelligent Puppets, Mu Ning faked his death to escape. After personally crafting a wooden serpent beast puppet, he returned to the Black Garment Tower's stronghold in Fenglin Town to report back.

To save his son, Feng Qingyuan, the master of the Wind-Listening Manor, revealed Mu Ning's true identity to the Thousand Mechanisms Sect and sought its protection. The sect sent its personal disciples Yan Li and Ye Feng, along with an Earth Armor, a Fire Armor, and a Water Armor, to lie in wait for Mu Ning in Fenglin Town.

The two men and three armors joined forces to wipe out the Qing Medical Hall stronghold. Its master, Situ Huang, died in battle, cutting off Mu Ning's escape route.

Mu Ning killed Feng Qingyuan and his son, Yan Li, and his fourth senior brother, Ye Feng, one after another, successfully seizing three fifth-tier intelligent puppets: Earth, Water, and Fire. He set out north for the Frostsnow Region with his ghost servant “Heart-Bewitching Charm” and spirit pet “Green Shadow,” hoping to evade the joint pursuit of the Thousand Mechanisms Sect and the Black Garment Tower.
