The Coin Maker

Lin Yi, a master's graduate in economics, transmigrates one day and becomes a condemned prisoner in the late Northern Song. With only three days until his execution, his sole bargaining chip is a slip of paper covered in numbers.

Using his modern financial knowledge, he pries open the gates of the Ministry of Revenue and makes a piece of paper serve as money, issuing “credit notes” in a poor county. The common people don't trust them, so he makes the paper redeemable for salt and grain. The powerful try to suppress him, but he turns the rules of the market against them.

When Jin troops invade the south and the treasury runs dry, he stands before the court with a piece of paper in hand. “Give me your trust, and I can keep the Song army paid.”

This is not a war of swords and spears. It is an economist using an abacus and credit to fight a dynasty's greed and an era's collapse.

Money isn't copper or iron. It's trust. As long as trust remains, so do we.
