A Heart of Wisdom Turned to Ashes

A meeting born of two souls resonating amid the misty rain of Jiangnan ultimately burned into ashes that could never be extinguished for the rest of their lives. Written by Huixin Chenghui, Ink Ashes is a contemporary Jiangnan love story, heartbreakingly beautiful and based 1:1 on a real-life case. Set against the worlds of Yixing calligraphy, painting, and Yixing clay teapots, and secondary education in Hangzhou, it portrays an ultimate clash between idealism and realism.

Zhang Mingmou, a gifted calligrapher, painter, and Yixing clay artist from Yixing, cherishes the purity and solitude of ink and brush, and holds to a classical ideal of lifelong love. When Lu Hui, a Chinese teacher in Hangzhou, weeps before his panoramic painting of Taihu Lake, Misty Islets, her three-thousand-character reflection on the work opens the door to his long-sealed heart. He travels a hundred miles to meet her with all the tenderness he can offer, staking everything on a marriage promise sealed in ink. But her love is too fragile to withstand the burden of a family that favors sons and the deep-rooted insecurity etched into her bones. A drunken joke becomes the turning point of fate: she gives up the moon she crossed mountains and rivers to reach, and clings to the straw within arm’s reach.

All the supporting characters’ names come from The Book of Songs. Five warm romantic subplots follow ordinary people, whose steadfastness and happy endings contrast sharply with the regrets of the main story. The novel vilifies no one; it portrays only the complexity of human nature and the unpredictability of love.

In the end, he retreats to Mount Taihua, and his brushwork is forever stained with desolation. She chooses reality, but lives with endless regret. When they meet again at an art museum a year later, his words, “I loved you, but that’s in the past,” express all that was lost. Neither ever marries again. The same Jiangnan rain falls on the rest of their lives, each spent guarding their own scars. The story has two endings, two different outcomes. Each is heartbreaking in its own way…
