In 2016, an old, damp apartment building with no management was steeped in unshakable gloom and the grime of everyday life.
With their parents gone from an early age, twenty-four-year-old Liu Mengjia dropped out of school to support the family. Armed with a sharp tongue and hard-earned street smarts, she struggled to get by in the adult world.
