Gu Yu is the illegitimate son of the Gu family. His mother was the other woman and died tragically in a car accident when he was young. His father favors the legitimate eldest son, Gu Chen, and treats Gu Yu with cold disdain. Gu Chen constantly belittles and humiliates him; only his grandfather protects him.
Deprived of love from childhood, he lacks empathy, is intensely self-centered, and has a gloomy, cold nature and ruthless methods. He is used to hiding his vulnerability behind control and cruelty. He doesn't understand love, mistaking possession for affection and taking it for granted that he can toy with others. At first, he treats Su Wuyue as a plaything to relieve his loneliness and vent his emotions, not realizing that he loves her. After hurting her again and again, he is consumed by extreme regret and obsession, and goes mad trying to win her back. The heroine, Su Wuyue, lost both her parents and was adopted by cruel foster parents. She suffers years of beatings and emotional abuse, and they force her to sell drinks at clubs to pay off their debts or be used as collateral.
She is slender and fair, with timid yet stubborn eyes. Sensitive and starved for affection, she has an air of fragility. At first, she endures and obeys, but after Gu Yu hurts her repeatedly, her heart dies and she escapes, turning cold and distant. Later, she becomes clear-eyed and independent, with nothing left for Gu Yu but hatred and exhaustion.
Two pitiful people abandoned by the world draw close, tear each other apart, and love and destroy one another. The pain runs from beginning to end.
