1990, northern countryside. The smoke from grandma's house is the clock of the whole village.
She comes from a landlord's family and has been strong, fair and capable throughout her life. There are seven bungalows in each of the two courtyards, with a low wall separating the two sons. The eldest daughter-in-law, Xiulan, graduated from high school, is petite and gentle; the second daughter-in-law, Hongying, is fierce and capable, and can control both inside and outside. Everyone in the village said: The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law never quarrel, and the sisters-in-law never argue. It is the most enviable home in the country.
But only the stove knows that grandma's "justice" is always a bowl of water.
She always felt that the eldest daughter-in-law was weak and aggrieved, and she always protected, pampered, and lived for her; the second daughter-in-law should be more capable and strong, and "don't have to worry". She should be bossed around and beaten. One was turned into a piece of trash, the other was treated to a heartache.
A "you know it too", a couple's quarrel, a slap in the face, a bottle of pesticide. In autumn, my second aunt fell in the pear tree field. In the winter, my eldest aunt was "spoiled" and was driven into depression. In an era when no one understood mental illness, she went crazy step by step.
Grandma stood in front of the stove, still holding the spatula in her hand, but the house had collapsed.
This is not a cool article, there is no counterattack. This is a true story about strength and limitations, preference and destruction. If you have a hometown you can't go back to, an unspeakable debt in your heart - this book is for you.
