Su embroidery originated in the Spring and Autumn Period. Legend has it that Zhong Yong's granddaughter "Nu Hong" first made embroidered clothes. She embroidered dragon patterns on her clothes to replace tattoos. The Suzhou embroidery sutra bags unearthed from the Ruiguang Pagoda and Huqiu Pagoda in Suzhou, which were built during the Five Dynasties and Northern Song Dynasties, are the earliest physical objects of Suzhou embroidery discovered so far. After the Song Dynasty, Suzhou embroidery technology flourished. It reached its peak during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Suzhou was known as the "Embroidery City" and Su embroidery was listed as one of the four famous embroideries.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Shen Shou incorporated the simulated characteristics of Western painting portraits into embroidery and created "simulated embroidery". In the early 1930s, Yang Shouyu created "chaotic stitch embroidery" with criss-crossing and overlapping layers.
