Reborn in the 1980s: I Haul Up Ten Thousand Pounds of Giant Creatures

In 2024, old fisherman Gu Chaoshen died in the South China Sea during a super typhoon. When he opened his eyes again, he was back in the summer of 1980.

He was still the poorest eighteen-year-old in Shitang Bay on the Leiyang Peninsula in Guangdong, living in a leaky thatched hut, rowing a battered, leaky sampan, with pockets emptier than his stomach.

In his past life, he had been a miserable failure. Others took his best fishing grounds and stole his good business opportunities. In the end, he died alone at sea, with no one even to retrieve his body.

But Heaven had given him a second chance.

He brought back forty years of experience fishing the shores, an intimate knowledge of every inch of sea, and a precise understanding of fish prices and policy trends over the coming decades.

The tide goes out? While everyone else is picking clams on the beach, he heads straight for a hidden reef crevice and pulls out a wild abalone weighing three jin!

The tide comes in? While everyone else packs up and heads home, he takes his spear into the water and spears a forty-jin leopard coral grouper in one shot!

People say that stretch of sea is dead, with no fish in it. He goes anyway. One net hauls in eight hundred jin of wild large yellow croaker, their golden bodies covering the entire boat. The whole village stares in shock!

And that’s only the beginning.

Giant lobsters in deep-sea reefs, a thousand-jin bluefin tuna unseen in a century, heaps of old sea cucumbers inside an abandoned shipwreck... Every trip out to sea is a feast of jaw-dropping giants.

From a battered sampan to twelve deep-sea fishing vessels.

From the poorest bachelor in the village to the South China Sea’s Fishing King, with businessmen from the provincial capital lining up to meet him.

Gu Chaoshen squats at the bow, cigarette in his mouth, watching the vast waves glow in the sunset. “I’m the one who calls the shots in these waters.”
