I Settle the Dead's Accounts on Funeral Street

My name is Chen Zhaoye, and I’m a funeral-home cleaner.

That day, I found a burial robe in a room for the dead, with my name sewn inside.

A coin for the dead rolled from a corpse’s mouth, engraved with four words: The White Candle Ledger Begins.

After my grandmother died, I inherited a shop on Funeral Street.

The living come to me to settle their troubles. The dead come to me to collect their debts.

Only later did I understand: ghosts aren’t frightening.

What’s frightening is when the living owe a debt and still expect someone else to pay it for them.
