In 1970, the winds of Hongqiling cut like knives.

Shen Tangning, a frail young woman sent to the countryside as an educated youth after her ruthless relatives stole her registration, finds herself at the center of the entire brigade’s scorn and prejudice from the start.

There are slick, lazy educated youths, a stubborn, old-fashioned barefoot doctor, and poor farmers willing to fight tooth and nail for a mouthful of coarse grain.

Can’t compete physically? Then she’ll win with her brains!

Armed with a mysterious old book that can identify every kind of herb and diagnose pests and diseases, Shen Tangning carves out a path to success in an era when people live by work points.

She doesn’t shout or make a fuss, yet a single sentence from her can leave a credit thief with no way to save face. She doesn’t fight for recognition, yet with a dose of plant ash she can wipe out pests ravaging three thousand mu of corn, forcing the arrogant brigade leader to bow his head in public and winning the wholehearted respect of the village’s old farmers.

The brigade leader’s son, Gu Beixiao, is as cold as ice and the roughest man around. He becomes her sharpest blade. She sets the rules, and he carries them out; she breaks through sinister schemes, and he shields her from disaster.

A powerful alliance between two clever people should have let them coast to victory in the seventies.

But just before the corn is ready for a bumper harvest, an eerie water stain, deep as an abyss, appears in the harvest ledger that has never once been wrong.

The human-made disasters have passed, but a natural calamity is on its way. As she faces the raging currents of this turbulent era, how can she save everyone in the village?
