Above the Three Realms, the Tathagata laid out a game of chess.
He used the energy of chaos as its frame and a fragment of Sun Wukong's soul as its spirit, personally creating a macaque: Liu Er.
Liu Er was born to be a chess piece, Sun Wukong's backup, and a tool in the Tathagata's schemes. He didn't know who he was or where he came from. He simply slept in the bamboo grove of the Nine Nether Marsh, waiting for the day someone would awaken him.
After he was awakened, he was sent to Spirit Mountain to be tempered and ordered to become Sun Wukong, the “real” one the Three Realms needed.
But Liu Er refused.
He refused to disappear into Sun Wukong's shadow, and refused to become a dead piece on the Tathagata's chessboard.
He only wanted to know: If I am not Wukong, then who am I?
