Poetry, Wine, Sword, and Song

This is a slow-burning wuxia novel told in a realistic ink-wash style. It follows an ordinary person, not a hero, not a genius, just a young man who once dreamed of the martial world.

Shen Jinghong left home at eighteen, thinking the martial world meant poetry, wine, swords, and songs, and that a hero would roam the world with a sword at his side. He met a girl who sang for a living, a retired veteran, bandits in a mountain stronghold, and soldiers guarding the border. He lost his sword in Yangzhou, lost his soul in Huanzhou, and was dragged through the blood-soaked streets of Hongde City. One by one, his comrades died before his eyes, and scars piled up on his body.

There are no miraculous encounters from the heavens, no peerless secret manuals, no satisfying revenge. There are only muddy roads, cracked wounds, and a family letter half-burned by fire. The martial world isn’t what he imagined. Elder Meng was right: the martial world is the mud beneath your feet, the blood on your body, and the home you can never return to after you step outside. It isn’t white robes like snow, but coarse padded clothes; it isn’t a sword that kills with one strike, but a blunt knife slowly cutting into flesh; it isn’t fame and success, but traveling a very, very long way, then looking back and realizing you can never go home.

This is a slow-burning novel, like an ink-wash painting, built stroke by stroke and dab by dab. By the time you finish reading, you may realize that the boy’s dream of the martial world has shattered into pieces, turned to ash, and scattered in the wind along a road he can never take home again.
