Qin Lan was an utterly ordinary Black Impermanence, going about his daily business catching ghosts.
Then, through a little mishap, he ended up in a parallel world.
There was no Underworld here, nor any orthodox gods of the netherworld, but there were demons and ghosts aplenty.
Everyone studied to become a Taoist priest and catch ghosts. The only way to survive was to become a Taoist priest, a martial artist, or a Buddhist monk.
During the Taoist sect's entrance exam, Qin Lan wielded a soul-hooking chain in one hand and a mourning staff in the other, dispatching evil ghosts with ease.
“Everyone else has a peachwood sword. What kind of magical weapon is that?”
“No, wait. The most anyone else killed in the exam was a dozen ghosts. How did you kill over a hundred?”
“Who goes and clears out an entire mass grave?”
On top of that, Qin Lan had a door that could produce all kinds of resources whenever he ate a ghost.
On his very first day in the Taoist sect, he started grinding through missions, clearing out the sect's long backlog as easily as emptying a shopping cart.
Wherever he went, he farmed missions. The sect members wailed and pleaded for him to leave as soon as possible.
When Qin Lan finally grew bored and realized the martial artists could hunt demons, he went over to try that out too. Everyone in the Taoist sect rejoiced.
“The grindlord has finally left. We nearly starved to death.”
“Can you believe it? I’m a Celestial Master, and I almost starved.”
“Now it’s the martial artists’ turn to suffer.”
…
Years later, Qin Lan created an Underworld of his own on Blue Star.
But one day, someone from his old home showed up, and the old Underworld reappeared.
The Netherworld Emperor looked at this Underworld, which was even beyond his wildest dreams, and was stunned.
“What’s going on? How is this Underworld even more powerful than mine?”
