Thirty years after the Red Scissors Cataclysm, shadow calamities run rampant, technology has collapsed, and all modern weapons have failed. Only Chinese paper-cutting, passed down for a thousand years, can decide life and death and suppress demons.
Lin Zhan is the famously lackadaisical stall owner in Luozhi Town. Every day, he sprawls in a folding chair with an orange-flavored lollipop in his mouth. His paper-cutting stall is open one day and closed the next, his sharp tongue could enrage the dead, and he's so laid-back that even if the sky fell, he'd want to take a nap first.
Everyone in town thinks he's a good-for-nothing who lives off others and waits to die. That is, until a Level Three shadow calamity tears through the town's defenses. The official paper-cutting masters are driven back, and thousands are about to be swallowed by the shadows.
The young man who used to slack off every day slowly pulls out a pair of rusty scissors. Red paper falls, the blades rise, and a paper talisman summons ghost soldiers to march. Paper figures wielding knives cut down every shadow calamity!
"Quiet. I just want to laze around. Who the hell told you to interrupt my slacking off?"
The door gods he cuts can suppress a hundred ghosts;
The ghost soldiers he cuts can slay gods and demons;
The dragons and phoenixes he cuts can shatter the heavens!
The Red Scissors Headquarters begs him to join, ancient paper-cutting clans plead for him to return, and the Shadow Calamity Cult considers him its greatest enemy. He only waves them away with a lollipop in his mouth. "Don't bother. A job means clocking in, and returning means going to work. It's much more comfortable lazing around in town."
But when the people he protects are hurt, the town is surrounded, and the spark of human civilization is about to go out, that laid-back young man finally makes one cut to settle the fate of the world.
One cut shapes the universe; within a tiny space, the heart of humanity is revealed.
I will protect this world of men.
