The protagonist, Lu Xuansheng, is twenty-eight years old. On the surface, he is an unremarkable fortune-teller who sets up his stall beneath a pedestrian bridge in an urban village. His sign reads:
One reading costs a fortune. No charge if I'm wrong.
No one knows that he comes from the Lu family, a lineage of folk fortune-tellers known as the Lu Celestial Secrets Sect.
Ten years ago, the Lu family was caught up in a shocking feng shui scheme after changing the fate of a wealthy and powerful client. His father died mysteriously, his mother vanished after losing her mind, and his master was framed and imprisoned. Lu Xuansheng went from a gifted young prodigy to a charlatan mocked by everyone.
He has spent ten years lying low, determined to uncover the truth behind his family's extermination.
The story begins when he reads the face of a mysterious woman who comes to see him in the middle of the night.
She is fair-skinned and beautiful, with a cool, striking air, but her face bears ominous signs: a lonely fate, the shadow of bloodshed, and ill-starred romance. She is skeptical and even deliberately tries to test Lu Xuansheng with her charms. To her surprise, he exposes a secret she has kept hidden for years with a single sentence:
“You didn't come to ask about love. You came to find out how many days you have left to live.”
From that reading onward, Lu Xuansheng is drawn into wealthy families' murder cases, deadly feng shui plots, business conspiracies, romantic entanglements, and battles between practitioners of the occult.
As he tells fortunes and changes people's fates, he also investigates the tragedy that befell the Lu family.
He has seen the greed of the powerful, the temptation of women, the betrayal of brothers, his mother's madness, and the sacrifice of the woman he loves.
In the end, he discovers that the “destiny” he believed in has long been manipulated by others.
He is no fortune-teller.
He is the last person capable of breaking the grand scheme that governs the world.
