In 1863, during the American Civil War, a motley convoy composed of Union Army deserters, abolitionists, gold prospectors, and Native Americans headed west through the "Greater Nebraska Territory" that had not yet been officially mapped. They discover a grassland that does not exist on the map: the grass here will fluoresce in the moonlight, and any corpse buried in the soil will grow a plant with human-face-shaped flowers the next morning. Members of the convoy began to die one after another in an "absolutely rational but emotionless" manner, and a directional symbol woven from blades of grass was always left at the scene.
