Luo Yansheng, nicknamed Xiao Shitou, is eighteen years old and the son of the Ghost Mother, Liu Hongying. Born on a snowy night in a mass grave, he bears a yin fetus mark between his brows and was born with Yin-Yang Eyes, allowing him to see what ordinary people cannot. He was found and raised by the spirit medium Liu Sanniang. Considered a monster by the villagers as he grew up, he is quiet and withdrawn but steadfast at heart. Half of the Ghost Mother's life force is sealed inside him. He carries the bloodline of a ghost immortal, though he does not know it. Only after Liu Sanniang disappears in the mountains does he take up a hoe and venture into the depths, setting out on a fated path from which there is no turning back.
Liu Sanniang, over seventy years old, is the most famous spirit medium in the surrounding villages. Her true form is that of a disciple of the Liu family's immortal spirit, who has cultivated for a hundred years. Eighteen years ago, she carried a yin fetus infant back from a mass grave. Though she knew the child had been born to her past-life enemy, the Ghost Mother, she raised him by her side, using half a lifetime of cultivation to suppress the yin energy within him. She taught him neither offensive arts nor techniques of attack, only how to conceal his strength and stay alive. She and the Ghost Mother, Liu Hongying, share a debt from a past life: Liu Sanniang was the one who personally sent Liu Hongying to the ancestral hall's offering table. She enters the mountains not to banish evil, but to atone.
Daoist Master Qingxuan, whose secular name is Zhang Wenfei, is a wandering Daoist bearing Heaven's mandate to uphold righteousness. He is full of righteous energy, deeply cultivated, and specializes in countering the evil spirits of the mountains. He comes to investigate disturbances in the yin energy deep in the Northeast mountains and saves Luo Yansheng at the mass grave, becoming his guide. Quiet and steady, he acts decisively. He both protects and tempers Luo Yansheng, serving as the team's most dependable shield.
Liu Hongying, the Ghost Mother. She was once an orphan from Baijia Village, sacrificed by the villagers at the ancestral hall. By secret order of the Five Immortals' Altar, the Gray Immortal stripped away her facial features. Her resentment took shape, and she was transformed into the Ghost Mother. After giving birth at the mass grave, she fled alone to the ghost city in Yin Mountain, where she has been imprisoned for eighteen years. Faceless, she can neither be reincarnated nor ascend to immortality. She gathers the power to break through the grand formation by devouring yin veins.
