The Villagers Reported My Illegal Bridge, Then Regretted It When I Tore It Down

There's a river in front of our village, and whenever anyone goes into town, they have to take a detour of more than three hours.

I spent 200,000 yuan of my own money to build a bridge, cutting the trip down to just over ten minutes.

For people from other villages, the toll is one to five yuan depending on the size of their vehicle. People from our village cross for free.

But Uncle Chen, a neighbor who hadn't contributed a cent, showed up at my door with the police and pointed at me.

"He's the one who built an illegal bridge and made a fortune by forcing people to pay tolls. He's completely selfish and only out for himself!"

I thought the other villagers would speak up for me, but instead, they all chimed in.

"We all have cars now. We don't mind taking a detour. Why should we waste money on him?"

"Exactly! His bridge must bring in over a thousand yuan a day. What a greedy man!"

I was utterly stunned.

Since the bridge was built, I hadn't even collected one-twentieth of what it cost me!

The villagers chattered among themselves, saying they'd let me keep collecting tolls if I split the money evenly with the village from then on.

I gave a cold laugh and spoke up.

"No need. Since this bridge is an illegal structure, I'll just have it torn down!"
