Half a Life in the Sand: Lost in Midlife, Yet Finding the Light

Lao Lu, a forty-five-year-old mid-level office worker, is laid off when his company downsizes. Burdened by a mortgage, his children's education, estrangement from his family, and friends and relatives keeping their distance, all he has left is the dignity he spent half a lifetime building and the exhaustion of having nowhere to turn. At rock bottom, abandoned by everyone, he swallows his pride and finds whatever work he can. He makes it through the coldest winter of human nature. In the end, he doesn't claw his way back to wealth and success, but he holds on to his principles, rekindles the warmth of his family, and secures a quiet, steady life for the years ahead.
