Synopsis of The Yin Messenger’s Ledger
During the Daoguang reign of the Qing dynasty, there was a coffin shop at the entrance to Qingshi Lane in Baoding Prefecture. Its owner, Liu Yi, was an honest carpenter. One night, he rescued a mysterious man named Yin Qi, who claimed to be a “yin messenger.” From then on, Liu Yi was drawn into a series of bizarre murder cases: a bride in a paper wedding gown dropping dead in the main hall; wooden puppets made from real human bones; and a yamen adviser and a crooked doctor dying one after another...
Barefoot as he investigates, Liu Yi discovers that every crime leads back to a mysterious organization: the “Disciples of the Medicine King.” Under the guise of selling “solutions,” they teach evildoers ways to harm others, then use Liu Yi to “settle the accounts” and silence them. As his apprentice Ma Xiaoyuan and Liu Rushi, a mountain-moving agent of the Underworld Bureau, join him, Liu Yi gradually uncovers a shocking conspiracy: Medicine King Valley uses “human-making techniques” to create puppets; a mole within the Yin-Yang Bureau is conspiring with forces in the mortal world; and the mastermind is none other than Su Yuanshan, the previous generation’s mountain-moving agent, who appears to be a kindly old man.
Blending folk supernatural tales, mystery investigations, and struggles of conscience, the story explores the timeless questions of justice and revenge, freedom and shackles through the premise of “yin messengers collecting debts.” Liu Yi goes from refusing to be anyone’s weapon to becoming a weapon in his own right. In the end, he overturns the whole game and wins justice for every wronged soul. The story is steeped in eerie, uncanny folk legends while offering a clear-eyed look at the world and the people in it.
