1961, Berlin, the heart of the Cold War. Twenty-year-old public student Zhang Guiyuan accidentally entered the East District checkpoint on the last night when the isolation net was closed, and was hidden in the attic of an old apartment by a man named Chen Yiheng.
Chen Yiheng was twelve years older and an interpreter at the embassy in East Germany. He was burdened with secrets and his eyes were as cold as the morning mist on the Spree River. There was only a sparrow knocked unconscious on the window frame, a radio with intermittent signal, and a wall that was about to close at dawn. The two exchanged fear with unfamiliar body temperature, and used taboo language to differentiate between friend and foe - before the wall was built, there was still a whole long night for defection.
