Kugen was born with a bitter life. He was born without his mother on a snowy night. He lost his father when he was three years old and became an orphan. He grew up eating the food of hundreds of families, was beaten and scolded by the landlord, and bullied by the foreman while working on the dock. He struggled with hunger, cold and wandering all his life. The only one who gave him warmth, Father Chen, and A Tao, whom he met briefly, both left him one after another. Finally, in the early morning when the city was closed by heavy snow, he passed away quietly in a ruined temple, holding half an old piece of bamboo.
