Gao Chengshan, the hero of the Volunteer Army, was a poor boy from Yixian County, Hebei Province. He lost his mother when he was young and his father when he was young. He adopted an adopted daughter at the age of eight, herded cattle for the landlord at the age of thirteen, and worked as a long-term laborer at the age of fifteen. When the Eighth Route Army entered the village in 1938, he saw a way out for the poor. In 1940, 18-year-old Gao Chengshan secretly joined the Communist Party of China and joined the army in the same year. From the Anti-Japanese War to the War of Liberation, he grew from a soldier to an iron-blooded company commander step by step, and made great achievements in combat.
In 1951, the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea entered a critical stage. Gao Chengshan led the 1st Company of the 612th Regiment of the 204th Division of the 68th Army of the Volunteer Army and was ordered to hold on to the 938.2 Highland in Jinhua County - this is the choke point for the division's defense. Faced with the fierce attack of two enemy regiments and repeated bombardments by aircraft and artillery, he swore an oath: "Fight until one man is shot and one shot is fired, and never take a step back!"
For five days and four nights, the highlands were stained red with blood. The bullets were gone and the bayonet was broken, and the bayonet was broken by the stone. Gao Chengshan led the entire company to repel more than a hundred enemy attacks, killing and wounding 1,845 enemies. In the end, almost all of the company died heroically. He was posthumously awarded special merit and awarded the honorary title of "First Class Combat Hero". The 1st Company was awarded collective special merit and was hailed as the "Special Meritorious Company".
This is a true story. There is no fiction, no myth, just a spiritual monument built by a poor farmer's son with his flesh and blood. "The flesh can be beaten to pieces, but the bones cannot be broken" - these are the bones of the Volunteer Army, and this is the backbone of China.
