Zhen Meng got dumped by his girlfriend. In a fit of rage, he slapped her twice, then ran off back to his hometown. One night, he got up to use the bathroom and saw his old mutt, Da Huang, whom he’d raised for over a decade and thought would never die, standing upright. The dog grinned at him and spoke: “Look at me. Do I look like a human or a god?”

As he hovered between life and death, he vaguely saw the orange tabby he’d raised for eight or nine years slap the dog across the face.
