Summary of Chapters 1–60 of The Misty Shore of Ningzhou (500 words)
At her engagement banquet, Su Wanqiao is publicly humiliated by her future mother-in-law. Suddenly, she sees colorful “causal threads” wrapped around everyone: blood red means they have a guilty conscience, while white means they are blameless. Acting on instinct, she tells the truth, and her future mother-in-law collapses on the spot. The price is coughing up blood. A man named Xie Jinghuai hands her a cup of tea and tells her she is the eighteenth Truthspeaker. Speaking the truth will drain her life force, and only a Vowkeeper can share the backlash.
From then on, Su Wanqiao fights on two fronts: using “information asymmetry + truth-speaking” to deliver face-slapping blows to her creditor Song Guoming, the mastermind Gu Zeshen, audit team leader Chen Zhengguo, and the head of the Anomaly Administration; while also investigating the secrets of her grandmother Zhang Mei and father Zhang Hua. It turns out her grandmother was once Ningzhou’s most powerful Truthspeaker. Twenty years ago, she jumped into the mine to seal the out-of-control “particle source,” destroying her vocal cords. Her father, meanwhile, spent his life shouldering the backlash for her.
Xie Jinghuai’s past is even more complicated: Shen Mei, founder of the Immortality Project, once drained his blood to create “artificial white.” He later killed Shen Mei, and, burdened by guilt, became a Vowkeeper. He and Su Wanqiao form a blood pact lasting 115 days and shoulder the contamination value together. The truth about the mine comes to light: her grandmother wasn’t forced to die. She jumped in of her own free will, using herself as a lock to seal Shen Mei’s consciousness. Her true final letter states that the particle source should be released as a public energy resource, bringing the Vowkeeper system to an end.
In the final battle, Shen Mei revives by taking over the body of Zhou Muchen, an emotionless vessel she created herself. Su Wanqiao doesn’t fight alone: Song Guoming hacks Shen Mei’s account from prison, Zhang Yan cuts off the ventilation ducts, Lu Zeming sets up a medical station, and all 1,000 members of the mutual aid association step forward at once
