At Midtown High School, Ray Lawson is an unremarkable social outcast.

By day, school bully Flash Thompson picks on Peter Parker in front of everyone. Ray steps up and punches him, shattering the guy’s nose on the spot.

By night, he is the vigilante “Man in Black,” a figure who haunts the nightmares of New York’s underworld.

Just last night, he massacred the Maggia gang during a deal at the docks and crippled more than a dozen members of the Costa family.

Now, crime lord Silvermane has sent his son Bud out to recruit mercenaries across the city, offering a sky-high bounty for Ray’s head.

The truth is that on the day his mother was murdered eight years ago, Ray made a promise at her funeral with Peter, who had lost both his parents: one day, they would build the greatest team of heroes.

Now, every assassin in the city is hunting the Man in Black.

But with his body covered in wounds from the previous night, Ray is hanging out with Peter and Anmian at the World Technology Expo.

The two mutated spiders exposed to radioactive rays are slowly lowering themselves on threads from the ceiling of the exhibition hall.

Two spiders bite, and their powers awaken!
