In 2026, the world turned into a furnace.

Pei Qingyan, the heir to a powerful family, controlled the city’s entire power supply. Everyone revered him as the “Buddha”: cold, ascetic, and seated high upon his altar.

Only I knew that beneath his monk’s robes lurked a rabid dog.

Three years ago, he sent me to prison with his own hands. On the day my child dissolved into a pool of blood, he set off fireworks all night for his new lover.

Three years later, an apocalyptic heat wave struck, and ice became more precious than gold. To save my younger brother, who was dying of a high fever, I fell to my knees before him.

Rolling his prayer beads, he lifted my chin. “Yu Sheng, when you pray to Buddha, you have to get on your knees properly.”

He locked me in a top-floor steam chamber, where the glass was hot enough to fry flesh. Every night, he broke his vows and pinned me beneath him as I sank into ruin. “Hot? The fire you lit in my heart back then was ten thousand times fiercer than this.”

On the day the whole city erupted into chaos, he kicked down the door and pulled me, barely alive, from a pool of blood. His eyes red, he went mad. “Who said you could die? Buddha won’t take you, and neither will I.”

I smiled and slipped a bloodstained pregnancy test into his trembling prayer beads.

“Pei Qingyan, your little monster was just... sent to the afterlife by your own hand in that steam chamber.”
