On the first day after taking human form, Bai Yue faced the greatest crisis of a demon's life: her silvery-white fox ears and fluffy tail simply wouldn't disappear!
To avoid being captured by cultivators and turned into a mount, she pulled her hood tight and crept into a half-collapsed, dilapidated fox shrine halfway up the mountain.
She'd planned to get by on wild fruit, but she was simply too hungry. The gentle yet sharp-tongued young doctor at the clinic next door tempted her to gather herbs from a cliff with a plate of freshly baked osmanthus cakes. A half-baked demon hunter fainted at the shrine entrance, shouting about "slaying demons" before eating all the thin porridge she'd painstakingly cooked. Even the fat orange cat on a nearby mountain dared to openly steal her dried fish.
To scrape together enough copper coins for pastries and roof tiles to fix the shrine, the clumsy little fox demon can only fumble through a tattered spellbook. She helps the townsfolk find a puppy, brews insect-repelling soup, and uses wind control to sweep up leaves... With a few low-level spells that often go wrong and a stubborn urge to protect her own, she somehow turns a ruined shrine on a barren mountain into a cozy little home full of everyday warmth.
Much later, the ruined shrine becomes a grand sanctuary with red walls and green tiles, and legends of the Fox Immortal who protects the peace of the land spread far and wide.
When powerful cultivators from all around come seeking the immortal path, Bai Yue lounges in the sun on the veranda, her tail curling lazily as she takes a bite of osmanthus cake and says with an innocent expression:
"Honestly... all I wanted at first was to trade for a steamed bun!"
