Tang Tuanzi has had enough.
The sky on the steel planet is always gray, and the air is always cold. Every day, she squeezes into a subway car packed like a can of sardines and earns a salary she can see coming a mile away.
For three years, she saved every penny. Then she bought a place in a remote corner of the universe:
“Abandoned ranch, includes cottage and fence, low price.”
The agent, Jiang Rongrong, is a young woman with artificial beast ears. She tosses Tang Tuanzi a rusty key, along with a dusty little floating orb. “It’s yours. Whether you can fix it is up to luck.”
Tang Tuanzi replaces the orb’s battery, and it suddenly lights up: one eye, a coat of short fuzz, and two little wings fluttering wildly.
“System online. My name is Pupu. You don’t look like you have much experience, but you’re still better than rotting away in a warehouse.”
The moment Tang Tuanzi opens the ranch gate, three fluffy pink puff-beasts curl into balls and watch her warily.
She crouches and holds out her hand.
One clumsily rolls over and rubs its head against her palm.
A warm glow lights up at the edge of her vision.
Pupu whispers beside her, “A cuddle has healing properties. The effect lasts 30 seconds. Your heart rate has gone down.”
For the first time in three years, Tang Tuanzi feels like she’s truly alive.
Only later does she discover that the planet holds countless secrets: letters that can talk, an ancient temple deep in the desert, and a legendary fluffy beast said to understand every language spoken by ears...
And the last words left behind by the previous ranch owner:
“If someone is willing to watch a dandelion shower with you, that’s home.”
Tang Tuanzi looks up. Dandelion seeds are really falling from the sky.
A soft, fluffy rain.
