A chance meeting in a snowstorm on Mount Zhongnan leads Xiahou Zhao, not yet emperor, to pick up a jade pendant patterned with clouds. From then on, he remembers the white-clad girl he glimpsed only briefly, who stood apart from the world in incomparable beauty.

When the new emperor ascends the throne, an imperial decree summons the “eldest daughter of Prince Wu” to serve in the palace, tearing apart the carefully balanced lives they have built in each other's places. To protect their family, the brother and sister begin a series of nerve-racking swaps between the imperial palace and the court.
