You think pi is random? 3.14159265358979323846... It goes on forever without repeating, with no end in sight, and has passed every test of randomness invented by humanity. Mathematicians proved long ago that there could not possibly be any pattern in it. Lin Xiaoran doesn't believe it. Not that he doubts mathematics. He just doesn't believe that the word "proof" has exhausted every possibility.
