A few things to know: This isn’t traditional cultivation, it leans dark, has a slight ensemble cast, no official couples but plenty of one-sided crushes, and a little wish fulfillment. The female characters have a few flaws. The protagonist is the type to take what she wants. This is the author’s own personal favorite. The protagonist does sacrifice others to get answers. Read at your own discretion.
Synopsis (third-person narration):
I am Hui Yong, one of the ordinary candidates who legitimately passed the entrance exams for an immortal sect. I’ve always been rather conscious of danger. The cultivation world has suffered under the demons for far too long. After looking into things, I’ve recently come to a startling suspicion. I verified it, and... Good heavens, I can hardly believe it. There are no demons in this world. My dream of cultivating immortality with a clean conscience is shattered.
Then what about the fellow disciples who died at the demons’ hands, and the prodigies secretly murdered by them...? There’s no time to figure out why the higher-ups did all this. The question now is: am I going to die too?
Probably. There are so many clever people in the world. Surely someone figured it out before me. What happened to them? Am I already being watched and put to the test? This must be the sect’s real entrance exam.
At first glance, the immortal sect is a farm. When the time comes, they slaughter the livestock. I’m on the menu, so I’ll have to find a role that suits me. There are too many unknowns. Becoming an executioner who helps things along might be one option...
That’s right, you’ll do. You’re my teammates (Zhi Mingshu, Xu Hui, Zhe Jiming, Huai Shu). You don’t get a choice.
In a polished version:
The world is a play, all vying for a chance to ascend. See through the layers of human skin. Why fear death? Take the low road and shatter your innocence to ask the Dao’s foundation.
Wander into the banquet among the immortals, then lie drunk upon the high stage. The celebration of the mortal world, the feast of rivers and mountains, all lie before my eyes. Lower my gaze and smile, watching humanity at its basest.
Scheme and calculate, all to escape the chain. Trapped deep in the mire, yet there lies the way to undo the knot.
