A person is like a ring of growth; an era is like a fertile field. Chen Youchai, an ordinary farmer in the mountainous area of northern Hunan, was born on a snowy night in the 20th year of the Republic of China and died in the warm spring of the new century. He worked as a butcher, a cook, and a hunter, carried a load of three hundred kilograms, and carried the hope of a family; he experienced war and famine, and raised four children. His life has been intertwined with the life of this land - from the abject poverty of the old society to the expectations after the land reform; from the enthusiasm of the household contract to the relief of being lifted out of poverty. Seventy-three years of human fireworks, personal destiny like branches and leaves, and great changes of the times like roots, all together intertwined with the magnificent annual cycle of Chinese rural areas moving from suffering to revitalization.
