Synopsis

Xuandu began formally studying Buddhism under Wujing at the age of three. By seven, he could recite the Heart Sutra; at ten, he already had the bearing of an old monk when meditating; and by fifteen, he could recite the Diamond Sutra and the Shurangama Sutra backwards. Yet he never knew his origins, believing only that he was an abandoned infant rescued by his master. When he was eighteen, Xuandu debated with Wujing in the meditation hall over the meaning of “abiding nowhere” in the Diamond Sutra. Xuandu won with his dialectical argument that “to abide is not to abide, and not to abide is to abide,” but Wujing merely shook his head and ordered him to go down the mountain and cultivate. And so, a monk went down the mountain.
