In this world, everything has “seams.” People’s fates have seams, the long thread of history has seams, and there are seams between life and death. Ordinary people cannot see them, but Su Mu can.

Seam mending is the lowest trade in Chang’an. The bodies sent from the death cells, the nameless dead found collapsed in the streets, the prisoners executed by the authorities: all are sewn up by seam menders, who return the families a complete corpse.
