The first rays of morning sunlight fell across Li Ergou’s face.
He opened his eyes and saw not the ceiling of his bedroom, but the crude thatched roof of a cottage. The air was filled with a mixture of earth, hay, and… something rather unpleasant.
“Wait, wasn’t I looking up Qin bamboo slips at the library last night?” Li Ergou rubbed his eyes and sat up. He found himself lying on a hard wooden bed, covered with a rough hemp blanket.
He looked around. The tiny room was no more than ten square meters, with an earthen floor and mud-brick walls. Its only furnishings were the bed and a battered wooden chest. A gray cloth garment hung on the wall, its style so old-fashioned it looked like… clothing from the Qin Dynasty?
“Hold on, the Qin Dynasty?” As a graduate student in history, Li Ergou suddenly snapped to attention. He jumped out of bed and rushed outside.
Before him was a small courtyard enclosed by earthen walls, with a well and a stone mill. More importantly, he spotted several figures in the distance, wearing typical Qin commoners’ clothing and their hair tied up in topknots.
“Did I really transmigrate?”
