Empress Xiao: A Woman of Strength and Grace

Empress Xiao, wife of Emperor Yang of Sui, Yang Guang, was born into the imperial family of the Southern Dynasties. Fostered away from home as a child, she was gentle, courteous, and skilled in medicine and divination. After marrying Yang Guang, then Prince of Jin, she shared a deep bond with him and played a major role in helping him secure the throne. Once Yang Guang became emperor, she was made empress and continued to earn her husband’s respect.

Later, Emperor Yang’s extravagance and tyranny plunged the realm into chaos. Empress Xiao tried to remonstrate with him, but he refused to listen, and she was powerless to turn the tide. During the upheaval at Jiangdu, Emperor Yang was killed. Empress Xiao was fifty-two at the time. Taking the surviving members of the Sui imperial family with her, she was successively swept up by the rebel Yuwen Huaji and the insurgent Dou Jiande. She later ended up among the Turks, where she protected the remnants of the Sui dynasty in a foreign land.

In the fourth year of the Zhenguan era, she returned to the Tang and was welcomed back to Chang’an with honors by Emperor Taizong. She died at the age of eighty-one and was ultimately buried with Emperor Yang at Leitang in Yangzhou, with the rites due an empress. Over the course of her life, she lived through the Liang, Sui, and Tang dynasties and endured countless upheavals. She remained steadfast, retaining her dignity despite having little control over her fate in a time of turmoil. In the vast gallery of a thousand years of history, she left behind a small yet unyielding figure.
