What is cultivation? And why cultivate?
Some cultivate to extend their lives and transcend death, fulfilling their desire for eternal life.
Some cultivate to understand the mysteries of the universe and explore the meaning of existence at a higher level.
Some cultivate to survive and make their way in a world where the strong prey on the weak. In an age of endless competition for cultivation resources, cultivation is simply essential to staying alive.
Others cultivate to keep surpassing themselves and prove their worth, finding a sense of achievement and fulfillment along the way.
And still others cultivate to protect their loved ones, to keep those dearest to them safe and avoid a lifetime of regret.
Yet none of these was Ye Yun’s original reason for embarking on the path of cultivation. Perhaps all he wanted was to live freely, without a care in the world.
But can he really live a carefree life as he wishes?
Perhaps his fate was sealed from the very beginning. In the end, all those reasons will become Ye Yun’s purpose and unceasing motivation as he presses onward, step by step, to the very end.
I really like this kind of fairy tale that doesn't shout slogans. There is no such thing as a great road, only the different reasons behind cultivation - for survival, for protection, and for unwillingness. Ye Yun's original intention is very simple, but he is pushed forward step by step by the world. This contrast is really touching.
I'm used to seeing protagonists who want to dominate the world right from the start, but Ye Yun's setting of just wanting to lie down just irritated me even more. But he couldn't escape his fate after all, and those other people's reasons for practicing eventually became his motivation to move forward. In just one paragraph, the arc of the character is fully laid out.
