On the Day We Divorced, I Saw How My Ex-Wife Would Die Above Her Head

On the day of my divorce, an electric scooter hit me and sent me flying. When I woke up, everyone had a line of text above their head. Nurse: [27 years old, breast cancer in eight years.] I picked up my phone. The first contact was my ex-wife, Xu Tian. After hesitating for a second, I opened her Moments. Her latest post showed her with her new boyfriend in the Maldives, captioned, “The rest of my life, with you.” It had been posted three hours ago. We'd only finalized our divorce yesterday. My daughter sent me a voice message: “Dad, Mom says I can't go to her new home anymore. That uncle doesn't like kids.” Clutching my phone, I went to pick up my daughter and ran into my former father-in-law at the entrance to the residential compound. Above his head were the words: [62 years old, gas poisoning in three months.] The moment he saw me, he cursed, “Useless! I should've had my daughter divorce you ages ago!” “My daughter's new boyfriend is young and handsome, and his family owns three houses. What are you compared to him?” I glanced at the words above his head and deleted the warning text I'd written, one character at a time. Then I took my daughter's hand. “Come on, Dad's taking you for hot pot.”
