A History of the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties: The Classic Edition by Chen Yinke

This book is compiled from Chen Yinke’s lecture notes from his time at Tsinghua, the National Southwestern Associated University, and elsewhere. Approaching the subject through broad perspectives such as aristocratic politics, relations between the Hu and Han peoples, and religious beliefs, he traces the development of the tumultuous Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties. His original insights into issues such as the "Guanzhong-centered policy" reveal his sweeping historical vision and keen perception. Even today, this remains essential reading for scholars in the field.
