"Li Zicheng" is set during the Chongzhen period in the late Ming Dynasty. It depicts Li Zicheng's tragic journey from his embarrassment in the Shangluo Mountains to his desperate counterattack after the bloody battle in Tongguan Nanyuan, and finally the capture of Beijing and the establishment of the Dashun regime. The novel focuses on Emperor Chongzhen's internal and external difficulties, Yang Sichang's inability to recover, Zhang Xianzhong's capriciousness, as well as the loyalty, courage and contradictions of Li Zicheng's generals such as Liu Zongmin, Mrs. Gao and Hao Yaoqi. Through key plots such as "Division of Troops", "Bloody Battle of Nanyuan", and "Undercurrent in Valley City", it shows the struggle and growth of the rebel army in desperate situations, and profoundly reveals the social contradictions and the desolation of heroes in the late Ming Dynasty.
