In the year 2054, China's population fell below 400 million.
There were only a little over 200 million young and middle-aged people left who could work, get around, and keep society running.
There was no war, no plague, no natural disaster.
One generation simply refused to marry, another refused to have children, another left their homes behind, and another quietly grew old.
As the nearly one billion people born in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s gradually passed away,
all that remained in this land were empty cities, abandoned infrastructure, out-of-control machines,
and their descendants, who had retreated to the countryside to live self-sufficiently.
I lived through it all.
An ordinary Chinese man, born in 1991.
