She was gentle, patient, quiet, and dutiful, yet she bet ten years of her life on him and loved him with unwavering devotion.

The crown prince oppressed him. She braved clashes of blades and Wang Empress’s poisoned wine and assassination plots, putting herself in harm’s way time and again and surviving by the skin of her teeth. She stayed by the fallen prince Qi Yuan’s side all the way to the throne.

She bore him children and clung to his promise, “Never forget me,” believing her hardships were finally over.

Little did she know he would turn heartless as soon as he was crowned.

He despised her lowborn status as a concubine’s daughter. He had long been carrying on an affair with her peerlessly beautiful legitimate elder sister, Zhang Junyao. After exploiting her loyalty and wit, he forced her to surrender the empress’s throne and banished her to the Cold Palace.

To silence the world’s gossip, he left the throne vacant for five years and gave Zhang Junyao his undivided favor.

After five years of torment in the Cold Palace, she refused to bow her head, only to receive the imperial decree announcing Qi Yuan’s intention to make Zhang Junyao empress.

On the eve of the wedding, Zhang Junyao came to the Cold Palace herself and presented her with poisoned wine.

She died consumed by hatred. The only explanation given to the world was that the deposed consort had died of illness.

Her spirit lingered after death, drifting through the inner palace. She saw with her own eyes that the moment she died,

her son was drowned in a lake by the crown prince born of their illicit affair;

her young daughter survived, but was abandoned in a remote courtyard of the Cold Palace, left to scrape by alone with scant food and clothing.

Ten years of devotion, ended in a single, brutal death.

The faithless man and the vile woman, meanwhile, ruled the empire and basked in glory.

Those who betrayed her, harmed her children, bullied and humiliated her:

Not one of them will escape. She will settle every score, repaying blood with blood!

A grand tale of revenge and political intrigue is about to begin.
