In the autumn of 1941, Lu Mingyuan’s superior, “Tailor,” is assassinated in the French Concession. Before dying, he leaves behind a code only Lu Mingyuan can decipher: the thread count of a bolt of fabric. Lu Mingyuan rushes to the tailor shop and finds that the police have already taken away the body, but Tailor has left a string of numbers hidden in the folds of the cloth. Before Lu can work out what they mean, agents from the Japanese military intelligence service arrive.
