A red paper sedan chair at a street corner in the dead of night. Lift its curtain, and there’s no going back.
That night, Li Si merely lifted the curtain of a red paper sedan chair.
After that, this world no longer belonged to the living.
Li Si, a history graduate student, stumbled into this place and discovered that every corner of the town called Nightmare Town was steeped in the uncanny.
A white lighthouse stood in the distance. No matter where you went, it remained at the edge of your vision, yet you could never get any closer.
There were no maps, no boundaries, and no way out.
By day, you could wander freely around town: visit the church, the school, or the clinic whose lights were always on.
At night, they came.
They looked human, with stiff smiles and ashen skin. They could take the form of the people you knew best and call your name softly from outside your door in the voices you missed most. If you believed them, congratulations: they would successfully “hunt” you, and make a meal of you.
Stranger still, from the moment Li Si arrived, a string of numbers had been branded onto his left wrist: 99.
No one could tell him what it meant. All he knew was that the last person with a countdown disappeared on the night the numbers reached zero.
What was the story behind this town? Why did the monsters only appear at night?
Where did the monsters come from? What were the rules for surviving in town?
Why could the lighthouse always be seen, but never reached?
It was all a mystery.
If you’re walking alone late at night and come across a paper sedan chair, don’t get curious and lift its curtain.
If you do, welcome to Nightmare Town. Good luck!
Your countdown has already begun.
